With the visit of the golf3000 directors, John and David Stirling, in South Africa in late March this year, the company touched base with some of its clients, who were on tour, but also with local contacts Shortly after
the South African visit, golf3000 Directors attended the Lunch of Senator
Trent-Lott in Washington, with none other than Sir Sean Connery.
They were invited guests of the Scottish American Society Foundation
Event. March also saw the arrival of golfing enthusiasts from Scotland. Two groups appeared at the same time. Although there was a slight age difference, they were well impressed with what South Africa had to offer.
The
latest development in South Africa to be announced is Pearl Valley Golfing
Estate and Spa. Backed by the Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad.
The design of the course has been left to the, 'Golfer of the Century',
Jack Nicklaus.
One of the other developing Estates is Spier. With the golf course having been opened in November, work on the Hotel should be completed in the next 24 months. Working as one of the golfing managers at Spier is Hugo du Toit. Hugo is a physically challenged golfer, who hasn't allowed his disability to take away his love for the sport. He is due to be playing at the British Open (World Championship for one armed golfers) in June, at the Headford Course in Ireland. He feels that golf in South Africa for disabled golfers is slowly improving, where when he started out, things were quite neglected. Today he and others, play in exhibition matches around the country, which they use as a vehicle for disabled people to achieve as well as the abled. Hugo won the S.A.Open in 1999 and the S.A closed championship in 1998 and 99. He has worked at Fancourt, Arabella, Erinvale and did part of his training at Gleneagles in Scotland. He hopes that what he learned there, he can add to the organization of Spier. Winter is now descending here in Cape Town. The weather is a little colder but opportunities are still aplenty to play the game that fluctuates… from hole to hole, but one thing is for certain whether here in Cape Town or elsewhere in South Africa, Golf's enthusiasts exposure to S.A. is steadily increasing. |
